After retiring, I promised myself I would stop saying “someday” quite so often. My first experiment was a small group trip to Portugal. I almost talked myself out of it three separate times.
I worried about traveling alone. I worried about keeping up. I worried about being the person who packed the wrong shoes. Then I went anyway.
By the third day, I was sharing pastries with two women I had met on the trip and learning how to order coffee badly but enthusiastically. We got lost, found a tiny bookstore, and decided the detour was better than the plan.
Travel reminded me that adventure does not require being fearless. It just asks for a little curiosity and a willingness to step outside the usual routine.
Putting old on hold, for me, means staying available to surprise.
