My First 5K Was Mostly Walking

I used to think a 5K was for runners, and I was very clear with everyone that I was not a runner. Then a neighbor invited me to join a local charity walk, and I decided that “mostly walking” still counted.

The first week, I made it around the block. The second week, I added a hill. By race day, I had good shoes, a playlist, and no interest in proving anything to anyone except myself.

I crossed the finish line near the back, laughing harder than I was breathing. My time did not matter. What mattered was that I had said yes to something that sounded too late, too hard, and too unlike me.

That morning reminded me that movement does not have to be dramatic to be powerful. Sometimes putting old on hold is just taking the next step, then another, then another.
